Anthem Country Club

The Anthem Country Club is a Keith Foster/Hale Irwin design that some consider to be among the best in town for both golf and amenities. Available for play starting in 1999, the course was strictly private until early last year, however they now offer some daily-fee access to players who wish to experience the "country club" feel at an excellent facility.

Located 20 minutes from the strip in the upscale Sun City Anthem community, this course features rock formations, desert washes, and steep canyon walls that are unique to the south end of the Las Vegas valley. It is that landscape that makes this course such a joy to play, while offering players outstanding views of the city from the many elevated tee boxes.

From the back tees, the course measures 7,267 yards -- demanding long tee shots and accuracy from the box. The fairways are lush and narrow in places, but generally they are receptive and allow some room for error. The really unique feature on this course, however, is the dramatic elevation changes from one hole to the next, offering outstanding panoramic views of the Las Vegas skyline. Watch out for the six lakes and waterfalls on this course if your ball is a water magnet, as it does feature more water than the average Las Vegas course.

The greens at Anthem Country Club are what all greens aspire to be -- lush, pure, and true. As nice as they are to look at, however, they are not so friendly when lining up your birdie putt. The undulations can be severe in places, and most putts tend to break away from the mountain range that flanks the course on many sides. Try to leave the ball below the hole whenever possible, as many putts from above the hole can roll completely off the green.

For the discriminating golfer who demands outstanding golf, amenities, and service the Anthem Country Club delivers. Tee-times are limited to outside play, but if given the chance you should definitely make a point to visit this course on your next Vegas golf trip.
