Las
Vegas National Golf Club
By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy
Golfers who have been coming to Las Vegas for many years will remember
this course as the former Las Vegas Hilton Country Club. Located only
five minutes from Las Vegas Blvd, this classic course has been providing
guests with an outstanding traditional layout for over 40 years.
Formerly the host of the Las Vegas Invitational (where Tiger Woods won his first event as a pro in 1996), this Bert Stamps design is still a favorite among many who play golf frequently in Sin City. Due to location and great course conditions, our customers play this course year after year.
The course is long, almost 7,000 yards from the back tees, while featuring five challenging par-3s and only three par 5s. With a slope of 130, the course is manageable for the intermediate player and will offer a challenge for those who take it low. Due to the maturity of the course, there are many large trees that provide an "oasis" feel that most of the desert-style courses lack. While not quite comparable to another "strip" favorite, the Desert Inn Golf Club, this course does have a similar feel and a tradition that few others in Las Vegas can match.
Putting surfaces at Las Vegas National are typically very good, with undulations and sharp breaks that force the player to "bear down" when standing over the ball. Most of the greens are well protected with water and heavy bunkering, and many slope heavily from back to front- exactly what you would expect from a facility that hosted PGA events in the past.
Las Vegas National is, in fact, a vintage course in Sin City replete with pictures of Jack, Arnold, and Lee hanging on the restaurant wall. In a city where everything is relatively new, it's nice to play a course that has survived the phenomenal growth Las Vegas has experienced while maintaining excellent course conditions and feel. From the time you enter the colorful, rectangular shaped clubhouse to the 18th hole where Robert Di Niro and Sharon Stone "lived" in the movie Casino, the course offers a taste of a bygone era- one that witnessed Vegas in its heyday.
