Before the golf boom hit Southern Nevada, this design was the original desert style golf course built in the valley. Open now for more than 20 years, Painted Desert Golf Club remains an excellent round of golf at rates well below those of comparable courses.
Painted Desert is a test of skill for players of all abilities. Each tee-box is surrounded by dense, native vegetation that will cause some concern on your first shot. While the course is not long -- only 6,840 yards from the back tees -- it is important to be relatively accurate off the box. Each fairway is lined on both sides by desert wash areas that, while you can play from the area if you can find it, will undoubtedly begin to creep into the thought process as you approach the tee-box. You simply will not have a good round on this course if you cannot hit the fairways, which are narrow in several places, but generally receptive with few undulations.
The beautiful thing about this course is the soft, receptive greens that will allow you to go "pin seeking." In fact, they are some of the purest putting surfaces in town, offering the player a chance to work the ball on approach shots without too much fear of holding the green. Yes, you can even hold the greens while playing a Top Flite XL, or any other kind of rock. Even in the middle of summer, the greens at Painted Desert have remained immaculate due to the maturity of the course, and the outstanding work on the part of the course superintendent.
With rates well under $100 during the week, and just over the century mark on weekends, Painted Desert is a solid course that we feel should be a part of any Las Vegas golf package. The course does have quite a few homes surrounding each fairway, and does not offer the views of the Las Vegas skyline that many players prefer, but for a quality course at fantastic rates be sure to add this one to the list.
