Paiute
Golf Resort
By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy
Need golf? Paiute
Golf Resort delivers with three of the finest desert layouts in the
world. Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain, and the new Wolf course provide you
with a golf paradise that can only be described as "fantastic." They are,
in fact, the only Pete Dye designs in the area and are absolute "must
play" when visiting Las Vegas.
The Wolf Course is generally regarded as the best of the three, measuring
7,511 yards from the back tees and carrying a slope of 149. The course
is long and challenging, and offers very little relief throughout the
entire round; for that reason. If you have the game and the cash it is
very difficult to find a better option than this one.
A few years ago, Snow Mountain was ranked by a major golf publication
as the top public course in the state of Nevada. While the yardage book
on Snow Mountain boasts a "kinder gentler" Dye, which is largely true
on this particular course, don't be fooled into believing that you can
just waltz your way around the course. As always, there are the signature
Dye features such as railroad ties, large pot bunkers, and vast waste
areas, however the fairways are generally wide and receptive.
Sun
Mountain is similar in length and design to Snow Mountain, but features
narrower fairways and greens that are more protected than its' sister
course. The slope on Sun is a manageable 130, however players must be
accurate from the tee-box if there is any hope of scoring well. While
Snow offers some forgiveness, Sun is brutal if you cannot get that first
shot to go where you are looking.
The facility is located 35 minutes from Las Vegas Blvd. on the Paiute
Indian reservation, and there is neither a hotel nor a house anywhere
in sight. This is welcome relief from the daily grind that comes with
living in Las Vegas, and it is the only course (other than Primm) that
features nothing but pure golf. Don't just add this one to your list;
if you are coming to Las Vegas for golf there is no excuse good enough
to miss out on the Paiute experience.
