Primm Valley Golf ClubPrimm Valley Golf Club

By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy

If you demand the finest golf in the area, Primm Valley Golf Club could be the best. Featuring two Tom Fazio designs, the Lakes and Desert courses, this facility from beginning to end will leave you wanting more. In 1997, Golf Digest ranked the Lakes course in the "Top Ten Best New Courses" in the country. Only a year later, Golf Magazine gave the Lakes a No. 43 spot on the "Top 100 You Can Play."

While Las Vegas lays claim to Primm Valley, the facility is actually located just across the border in California -- approximately 45 minutes from Las Vegas Blvd. When the course was designed, Fazio had agreed with hotel magnate Steve Wynn that he would not build another course in Nevada for quite some time. Fazio had just completed his project for Wynn, a little course known as Shadow Creek, and at the time was prohibited from building another course in the state of Nevada. To get around this, he designed Primm Valley -- truly a jewel in the middle of the desert.

The Lakes course is considered the better of the two, and will give you all you can handle. While not quite 7,000 yards from the back tees, the challenge comes from the narrow fairways, abundance of water and undulations that rarely give the player a flat lie. The slope is 134 and the course is manageable for better players.

If the Lakes does not do it for you, test your game on the more difficult Desert course. This 7,131-yard masterpiece is equally impressive in design and condition, however with a slope of 138 it offers challenges and intricacies that the better player will appreciate. Featuring native vegetation and lined on all sides by the desert, this track rarely lets you off the hook and will punish the player who struggles with the driver.

Despite the distance from Las Vegas, the reward for your drive time is a "must play" facility that few in Las Vegas can match. If you go, try to play all 36 holes for a day of golf that is second to none.
