Rhodes
Ranch Country Club
By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy
Rhodes Ranch Golf Club is sort of an anomaly for a golf course in Las Vegas. Due to the 3,000-plus palm trees that line the fairways and the abundance of water on this course, it almost feels like a tropical setting. It is, without a doubt, a peaceful setting that features waterfalls and lush landscaping that greets players on arrival and leaves a lasting impression after the round is completed.
Considered to be a player friendly layout, this course was designed by Ted Robinson in 1997 and is located 20 minutes from the strip in the upscale, master-planned Rhodes Ranch community. The facility receives considerable local play, which should tell you something, however due to reasonable rates and immaculate course conditions the amount of resort play is increasing every year. Also, this course is a great venue for corporate or large group golf outings due to the friendly design and amenities that are second to none.
The wide fairways at Rhodes Ranch remain lush throughout the year due to fantastic work by the superintendent, and measure only 6,909 yards from the back tees. That, combined with a slope of 122, gives this course great appeal for a leisurely round of golf that will challenge players without humbling them. One very interesting feature at Rhodes is the amount of water on the par-3s. Three of the four par-3s feature water in front or just off to the side that come into play and force the player to really stroke it well to avoid trouble. However, there is some relief on the relatively short par-5s that will allow the "big hitter" to look at some good birdie opportunities -- and may just sneak in an eagle or two.
The green features on the course are relatively straightforward, with few undulations and a consistent speed that gives the player a good feel without the intimidation factor. There are some tricky putts and, as locals will tell you, most rolls will break towards the strip. The best part is that they are big and soft, and approach shots should hold well allowing for some good chances to score well.
Rhodes Ranch is currently the only course in Las Vegas that offers mid-week rates on Sundays, which in our book gives it an advantage over comparable courses in the area. Seasonal rates are very good -- better than most for a course of this caliber -- and should fit nicely into a golf package or for that one round of golf to be played while taking a break from Sin City.
