Silverstone Golf ClubSilverstone Golf Club

By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy

Located twenty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, this fantastic Robert Cupp design is quickly becoming a local favorite due to the outstanding 27-hole layout and world-class amenities that have set a new standard in the valley. The course conditions have remained pure, the staff and service are second to none, and the beer flows cold- earning SilverStone Golf Club a spot on our "must play" list when visiting Las Vegas.

This "jewel in the desert" has been open for play since June 2001, and has quickly established itself as one of the premier courses in the city. Jim Stanfill, Director of Sales and Marketing, has helped put it on the map by making SilverStone Golf Club the host course for the Las Vegas Celebrity Players Tour. In the past year, this course has held such events as the 2002 Celebrity Golf Classic and the 2003 Meat Loaf Celebrity Classic. Players such as Ray Romano, Charles Barkley, and Kevin James have enjoyed the wonderful golf experience that this venue offers to players of all abilities.

SilverStone is divided into three separate nine-hole layouts (Desert, Mountain, and Valley), each offering a unique and challenging golf experience that we consider to be one of the most enjoyable in the city. Depending on which combination you play, prepare yourself for yardage ranging from 6,958 to 7,159 from the "tips," with an average course rating of 73.1, and slope of 143. No, the course is not easy, especially Mountain No. 3 -- the longest hole in the Sate of Nevada at 653 yards (yikes!). I know, I know, pull out the big dog, crush one about 320, and go for it in two … however you might want to watch out for that lake that comes in to play and practically surrounds the green about 150 yards out. You certainly have to think your way around this hole, and around the course in general to have a nice score at the end of the day.

Not all of the holes at SilverStone are this intimidating; however, as the course offers all players a good chance to "take it low." This is made evident on the Valley nine, which is the shortest of the three at 3,398 yards from the back tees. The first two holes on this side, a long par-5 and a difficult par-3, are the most challenging -- requiring length and accuracy from the tee box. Once you pass that test, however, you are rewarded with wide open, back-to-back par 4s that measure less than 375 yards; a welcome reprieve from a course that rarely let's you off the hook.

The course does require players to be rather accurate off the box, with desert surroundings and fairway bunkers that come into play on almost every hole. Currently, however, you can play it out of the desert (if you can find it). That will change soon, as Pulte Homes is in the process of developing SilverStone Ranch; a community that will feature more than 1,800 homes. All in all, we feel that SilverStone Golf Club is a great opportunity to experience desert golf at its' finest.
