TPC
Canyons
By Ron Reece, The Internet Golf Guy
The Tournament Players Club at the Canyons is one of two TPC courses in the Las Vegas valley and provides a round of golf that can only be described as "superb." From the bag drop to the check-in to the last putt on 18, this PGA facility offers golf and service that rise to the top of the class in an increasingly crowded golf market.
The course was designed in 1996 by Bobby Weed and Raymond Floyd, and has since been one of the courses featured in the Las Vegas Invitational (formerly, the Invensys Classic). Judging from its pedigree one might think the TPC offers an unusually difficult layout, however with yardage just under 7,100 from the championship tees and a slope of only 131 we feel the course is very manageable.
Fairways at the TPC are the epitome of manicuring and are as consistent as it gets. They feature strategic bunkering and undulations that force the player to constantly adjust his swing and thought process. This alone makes the course difficult, simply because a 300-yard drive down the middle will often result in an uneven lie causing you to play your next shot with your feet above or below the ball. If and when you do receive a nice, tight lie however, you must capitalize on the next shot to keep the scorecard from blowing up.
Your irons are the most important clubs in the bag at this golf course. Particularly on approach shots, the player is forced to be consistent in order to take advantage of small, quick greens that place an emphasis on accuracy. Due to severe undulations and sloping- along with a very quick surface, the TPC can be intimidating when lining up that putt. Don't be discouraged as birdies are rare and pars are considered fantastic.
Several times throughout the year, the TPC will offer player the chance to play for $100 or less. Typically this rate is available in the summer, however you can occasionally receive a great rate in December or January. Also, try to plan on playing this course in early October or just after the PGA's Las Vegas Invitational as course conditions will be the best in town.
